This Mitochondria animation shows the function of a Mitochondrion (singular). This clip is a conceptual visual representation of how Mitochondria produce power in a cell. The Mitochondria, often referred to as the "power plant of the cell" are a membrane enclosed organelle found within eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria generate most of the cell's adenosine triphosphate, the cell's source of chemical energy. Mitochondria are composed of five distinct parts: an outer mitochondrial membrane, the intermembrane space (between the outer and inner membranes), an inner mitochondrial membrane, the cristae space (infoldings of the inner membrane), and the matrix (space within the inner membrane).
